  • Dandilion Cure??

Hope I have posted this in the right place?

Does anybody know the best way to try and beat dandilions on the lawn?
Im sure its down to pore drainige but I have airatied and scarified several times. Have also tried weedkiller for lawns but as fast as I cut the grass the dam things are back more than ever.

Its so annoying as when the lawn is cut it looks loverly then within a day or so theres loads.

    Any advice is welcome

Loosen the soil around them with a small garden fork and pull them out. The turf soon recovers. Make it a regular exercise every day to pull a few out. Keep the lawn regularly mowed and don't let them flower. Nil Desperandum!

I remember this tip from a gardening prog many years ago - have used it and it does work (to an extent) - great thing is, it will not need the weed to be treated with poison which might be harmful to kids, pets or wildlife.

Simply slice the dandelion off at the base and sprinkle ordinary salt on the wound.

The idea is that the salt is deadly to the weed - will dehydrate and burn it out leaving just the circle where the root once was.

I mowed my lawn yesterday, not a weed in sight (well, not in flower anyway). HALF AN HOUR LATER... TWO Dandilion heads appear. I gave them very short shrift and they were beheaded pronto I can tell you. I can't beleive how quickly they get the flower-heads. I'm sure I didn't miss them the first time, I only have a small lawn. I'm going to buy one of those long spiky grubber things, it will bring great pleasure I'm sure!

Mmmm.. I'd forgotton about that using salt, certainly worth a try. I wonder if it works with other weeds?

Yup, it works on Plantain too and many other weeds. Very effective on a hot day. My late Nan told me about it years ago, and I carry a bag of cheap supermarket salt in my gardening bag at all times. I pull the flower heads off to prevent seeding, then douse with salt. Good luck!

Pull them out root and all. I use an old pair of shears and push into the soil next to the root. This loosens the soil and normally the root pops right out. Quicker and more effective than using salt or any other chemicals. Its also very satisfying
