  • who's eggs are these??

    Hi,

I have some onions growng on in pots under glass and today in 1 (only 1) pot Ive found lots of little white eggs??
They are on the surface of the soil (non on the leaves), they look like ant eggs - but not an ant in sight.

If anyone has any ideason what they are we would love to hear from you?? I have a photograph but Im nt sure how to post it on here.

    Thank you
    Rachel

Slug eggs need to be under the soil, or else they dry out.

          Hi all,
Thank you very much for your responses. I followed the slug egg link - and Im not so sure - they are much more oval and spread out accoss the surface of the pot.

Im going to try to figure out how to attach the photo so you can see.
To ease my curiosity (incase I cant attache the photo and knowone knows what they are Ive popped the pot in a clear bag and Im going to wait untill they hatch!)

            Good Bugs or Bad bugs??

Ive figured out the photograph attachment business. (Thank you Two Sheds).

1st Pic is of the eggs - 2nd pic is the teeny wrigglers that have since hatched (in the confines of a sealed bag).

Now we are even more curious as to what they are - odd little wiggly things at present.

So ......... Good bugs, or bad bugs?? Should I release into my garden?

Hi. They look like the eggs of some sort of fly. I would be inclined to dispatch 'em in whichever way you feel up to!

Westforester, your compost is far too wet.
I don't know what the eggs are, but are likely to be some beastie that likes boggy conditions.

Westforester- I agree with TwoSheds. Your compost is far too wet Girlie - it'll start to rot the roots of what you've got growing in there?
I suggest that the next time you come visit me at The Funny Farm, that you bring it with you, and I'll hoik it out and repot it for you to save its life.
And you can pick up the terracotta pots that have your name written on at the same time.
                  And A Cuppa Tea.
But we'll get rid of the beastie eggs at the same time - no?!

Not detracting from the thread content, as identification of said nasties would be good for all of us to learn about!

Sorry, slightly off topic but i was interested to know where Heddlu Araf was, did a google search and surprisingly the top two listed are to threads here at growfruitandveg lol.

On topic, do you get many butterflies / moths near your location and could that be the source of the eggs?

Hi Paul G! Didn't we meet before on a previous gardening site?! Me thinks we did.

Anyhow. I think you'll find that it translates as 'Police Slow' in Welsh, and not a place name!

                        Hi Wellie

Definately would not have been me on another gardening site, i only started this year and this is the only site i am using.

The only other place i have ever used my name in this way for forums is on sea fishing websites and even then i am only a member on one now.

Lol on the translation, i guess it explains why this site was listed rather than maps on location, my brother in-law lives in Colwyn Bay and i understand from him that "Police Slow" is very much a standard across Wales, or as he prefers to term it "Slow Police"

Rachie - any luck yet on the Oval Egg Babies?
I'd be inclined on the ANT side of things, but the millions of Ant Parents aren't present - so I won't put my money on it just yet! X

PaulG. Apologies - but really nice to meet you now?! and I'm pretty sure you can put Gorsaf after Heddlu?!

Rachie - I'm 'itching' to know?!

Onion fly?....or scarid? or, as 2 sheds pointed out, pretty much any swampland fly by the look of that compost.

I didnt know that the compost could get too wet?? ooops - Ive been put and given them all a big drenching again toinght. I couldnt breat to think of them thirsty.

The eggs hatched - and turned into wigglers. These grew and turned into tadpole type things. Then they all left (Via the bin!).

Thank you for all you help - Im now completely plagued by greenfly - there are at very least 3 million hovering over my garden.

                              What to do???????

PS: Hi wellie - thanks for "The blue flower", its doing lovely and is significantly more massive than I expected!!
