Companion Planting

Hi,

Am wanting to companion plant my toms with some marigolds as organic pest control. Anyone have any suggestions about appropriate planting distances between the two?

i've stuck them either in the same pot of in pots next to each other
i think it's just the smell of the marigolds you're looking for to ward off those nasties
