Birds and pests with peas and beans

Can anyone give me any advice on growin peas and beans, ive netted them at the moment as they keep gettin there tops taken off ! I suspect birds, possibly a pheasant but how long should I keep the netting on them ? Also the peas are having there leaves eaten to give serated edges even though they are under the netting !
