  • Nematodes

I've found that I can use some nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) to get rid of the Sciarid fly maggots I have in my strawberries. Nemasys does a leatherjacket killer nematode treatment, but I've also seen something for ants. It's also the S. feltiae, but it's cheaper. Am I right in thinking it's the same thing and ok to use? It's the same species, but I don't know if there are different subspecies?

Help! I don't want to lose any more strawberry plants!

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new growbag, wash the old soil (and larvae/eggs) off your remaining strawbs and replant?

Keeping them drier this time, of course

Well, they're in a strawberry planter (one of those 32 plant jobbies), so I'd have quite a job doing that..and I don't want to disturb them as they're in flower/starting to fruit - or would that not matter?

        If they're dying anyway ...

you're right, it is a big job. If it was me (and I'm lazy) I would let the soil dry out as much as poss and see if that helps.

A big job and one I'm never going to manage with a nosy 22 month old! I've tried letting the soil dry out, but I think I'm going to have to try the nematodes and might get some rove beetles too. I have aphids, fungus flies and goodness knows what else! I want to save some of the strawberries while I can. If I can!
