I planted a whole row of sprouts at the weekend, I have a new allotment, which I have rabbit proofed and yesterday the who lot had gone, do you think it's birds or mice?

    Probably, yes.

I'm just moving your post to the pests board, for others to comment.

      Welcome to the Vine Mustbemad.
Probably the pigeons ate your sprouts. It's best to put some netting over brassicas to stop the pigeons feasting on them.

Definitely pigeons. They'll strip the lot at this time of year: lots of babies to feed.

I agree with Pigeons, but slugs and snails also like a cabbage.
Net plus some type of slug protection is needed - you will need a net anyway against the cabbage white butterflies so get a fine weave one or enviromesh stylie one

I've adapted an old trampoline enclosure to keep the nasties off mine and as you can see here the red cabbage and sprouts are very happy

thank you for all your help, my allotment is in a country lane in Cornwall so I guess that pigeons are responsible, have bought some more plants and will net them. It's so good to have people here who can answer and help with problems.

                  Thanks Jilly.
I admit I'm quite proud of it
Accidental really, we ordered netting through our gardening club and it didn't turn up when expected. Went in the garage for something or other and spotted the old trampoline enclosure... Reckon it's pretty perfect for the job, not much is getting through that
