  • Slug deterrent that seems to work

    Hi All

I planted out my brassicas a couple of weeks ago and none have been touched by slugs yet.

What I did was put a ring of chimney soot around each plant and so far no slug damage and there is over 100 plants in the ground.

I am also in the process of making garlic water by letting some plants rot down in a sealed bucket of water to see if it will deter cabbage whites.

Beware Greeks bearing gifts, or have you already got a wooden horse?... hehe.

I used to use soot to deter rabbits around the perimeter of my fence. I did though think you had to be careful as even soot is not what it seems. I was told by a sweep that the toxins (ie sulphur residue) left in the soot could be detrimental over a period of time and that wood burnt soot was the one to use. in fact by smell the seep reckoned he could tell who had been burning wood, coke, coal etc. be interesting to see your results as soot has been a well known deterent for a long while. maybe some budding chemist could throw more light on the subject. good luck all in the new season.
