Fly type thingy with enormous turquoise eyes

tried to take a photo but didnt come out well - it was a soldier fly or something like that - bee/wasp type body but absolutely ENORMOUS turquoise eyes.....in my verandah- caught it and let it go after searching through insect book - anyone any idea of actual variety????

no-one knows what this is? Enormous turquoise eyes? There were about 6 more today - killed them all....
