  • Soft stems on potatoes!

Was at allotment tonight & noticed that a few of my potato plants leaves had wilted ( looked like a plant that needed a good water). The stems of these were soft even rotten. Pulled up plants in case it was something that may spread to the other plants. Small pots had started to grow. HELP - What is it & will it spread to other plants? Should I have left them in?

    Rotten?

    Over watered, I'd say.

We have that too on a couple of plants but the spuds underneath are fantastic. I think from the book that it is black leg (?). If it is, then they need to be removed and burnt before it spreads. Apparently it is common in wet weather....
