  • Lesson of life or how to...

    squish a caterpillar
bloody disgusting things, munching on my brassicas
practice makes perfect so they say...(so I keep telling myself)

I use a bit of slate chipping and squish them against the leaf. If they're big ones, I'll use a stick to transfer them to the bird feeder.

I think I'm losing the battle... I turn my back for ONE day and the leaves are full of tiny tiny holes... *sigh*

I can't possibly do the hand-picking! You're brave! Sorry - can only manage snails 'cos they have a shell to hold! I would have to do weegarden's stick trick thing! Have even tried to use 2 twigs like chopsticks! Very fiddly!

Probably easier to use 'proper' chopsticks then Lemon

Anyway, I suggest everyone gets chooks cause they are two legged slug and caterpillar disposal units

tweezers are good for picking off caterpillars, esp. the ones that wriggle down inside the hearts of plants.

drop them in a jar of salty water, and compost them. Or non-salty water and put on the birdtable

Poor little things. Remember this thread when you're sadly discussing the lack of Butterflies when that thread appears!

I see 3 cabbage whites dancing round my veg beds as we speak......I much rather there be none.

I prefer to eat my GYO - not grow for insect/bug consumption.

I'm now using an amalgamation of my initial stick thing and Lemon's chopstick method and using two thick skewers to pick the l'il blighters off. Chopstick skills are go!

I followed a cabbage white today and squished the eggs as she went.

I have nasturtiums around, which one of the whites went for. They're welcome to them, it's what I planted them for, but I think they prefer the cabbages...
