huge caterpillar

hi has anyone seen a caterpillar that is about 9 cm long its very fat and has a barb sticking out from the back of its bum it has a really creased body and its ate all my pea plants !!!!!!!!!! yes i am very annoyed

Sounds like an elephant hawk moth caterpillar, dose it look like its got an eye at the opposite end to the barbed end ?

Well it would be fat if it ate all your pea plants. Have you tried a 'wanted' poster?

Gees! I don't like caterpillars at best of times - but a 9cm 'pillar? I'd be terrified as well as annoyed! Can't imagine the chookies eating that - but I'd hope that give it a good go!

Hi Tracy, you don't mention the colour but could it be this one -- Poplar Hawk Moth. Large caterpillar with spike at one end almost certain a Hawk Moth.
