  • Slug count

Bit morbid, I suppose, but I'm so cross with the snails just now. So I'm counting up how many I'm getting.

First I had the Bucket o' Death (plopped slugs in, sprinkled with salt or bicarb)...but now I've got some beer traps and throw them in there. I have caught some ginormous ones who had just wandered in them though.

Anyway, the point of it is I'm keeping a daily log - a slug count. Includes ones I collect and, if I manage to work it out, ones that fall in of their own accord.

    Thursday (my birthday) - 17
    Friday - can't remember
    Saturday (today - 1st August) - 10

How many have you got today?

Some slugs are actually good to have around. They are a pale brown colour, I think they are called Leopard slugs or something like that. They don't eat live plants, they like decomposing matter. I have tons in my compost bin.

Oh yes, looked them up. I don't think we have them though. At least, not that I've been seeing.

15 slugs in the traps from yesterday. I think they like cheap booze.

Not garden related, but I thought interesting: We have a new dual carriage way in Swindon which isn't being used, it was built for a new housing development that was posponed due to the recession, so we walk our dogs along it. I swear there are 1000s of slugs & snails along it, you can see 100s every day that have tried to cross, and been caught by the sun and baked alive, with 100s more in the grass at the sides.

Saw something strange the other day, 1000s of tiny brown snails smaller than a 5p, all in a line about 1ft from the edge of the curb, all the way along the road for about a mile.

Definitely many more slugs around this year than previous years!

My parents-in-law said early yesterday morning their lawn was covered all over in what they thought was cat poo - turned out to be hundreds of slugs that all disappeared about an hour later. Wonder what that was all about? I made a slug kebab today. I went around and amongst the veg beds and speared 14 on a long stick which went in the compost and gave me great satisfaction!
