  • carrot root fly

Hi. first time on forum with some thing to say, hope i'm not out of order with a tiny complaint.
I planted mr fothergills "f1 flyaway carrot seeds " in a purpose built bed 40 inches off the ground,ie in a tall box. so that ,even if thay were'n't carrot fly resistant they were ouy of harms way,, and guess what? you got it, I've just dumped the lot, riddled with the blighters. So, does anyone know how to grow carrots? I've been trying for 3 years now without success.

Keep em covered with fleece start to finish and you'll have no problems. Tuck in the edges with a spade and leave loose in the middle to allow for growth

Did you grow any other varieties also? The producers of the fly resistant varieties recomend that you also grow some normal sacrificial types.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Dont reuse that soil for any other crop that the carrot fly attacks as the larvae could still be present, you may be okay if you turn it over and leave for the birds etc. Sorry to hear about your problems, it getting to be an urban myth that the carrot fly suffers from vertigo at anything over 14".
