Hi,
I have 2 tomato plants that have grown well, and produced lots of large tomatoes, however, they have yet to ripen, probably due to the crap weather we've had. There were 2 or 3 tomatoes on each of these plants that were the size of tennis balls - I kid you not! - and I was really looking forward to eating them when they were ready.
I noticed over the weekend that 1 or 2 were begining to ripen in the brief spell of decent weather we've had for ages. However, upon further inspection I noticed that the tomatoes were rotting around the stems, each one either had a big block rotten hole in the top, or the vine was black and the tamato just fell off at the slightest touch.
What is causing this? The smaller tomatoes look OK, it just seems to be the bigger ones that are effected. Is it simply to much water collecting in the top 'well' where the vine attaches, sitting there and causing rot? Or is it something more serious? If it is just water, how do you stop it collecting? I usually water around the base, trying not to get water on the leaves/fruit, but we've had so much rain over the past month it difficult to protect against!
Many thanks
Ben
