Unfortunately, I've lost all my onions and shallots to a "worm" I've been told. Is there any advice out there to prevent this happening again, what can I do with my sets to be planted this October. I also lost all my garlic, the leaves went rusty and the bulbs just rotted, not one was saved. Again, can you give me any advice on how to prevent this. Are both onions and garlic better to grow in loads of manure. Any advice would be appreciated so as not to be disappointed again next year.

Onion Worm and Garlic Rust

I've heard rust is common with garlic - ours got it but they were nearly ready so it didn't hurt them. I think they like free draining soil with plenty of organic matter added, so yeah dig in some manure. If they rotted it could be onion white rot, but I think that shows up as a white furry substance on the roots - not sure about the worm. Only thing I can suggest is definitely don't plant them in same place next time. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be able to give you some advice.
