Craters?

We just bought a new house a little over a month ago and now were noticing small holes in our garden (which by the way has few plants in it at all). The craters are about 2 inches in diameter. I read another post on here regarding moles, so we're thinking it might be them...but can anyone diagnose a definite? Here's some pictures:

Moles make hills, not holes. And they is bigger than 2 inches

When were the photos taken?
No.2 looks like it's been dug ... reminds me of mining bee nests, but it's too late in the year now. And those are more like 5mm diameter.

Have you checked your bedroom? Looks like where the burglar stood his ladder! Only joking!

No idea really, unless you have a cat with OCD about digging holes to poo in!

Intriguing. My guess would be some sort of insect. It almost looks like a designed pit/trap.

Have you got a camcorder? You could try leaving it running on it and see if anything makes an appearance.
