No, definately be rid. It's one smell I'm really sensitive too (oddly I can't smell off milk though) and it turns my stomache. We had a hamster for a while (before he escape to live the free life) and I was forever cleaning the poor think out as I thought he stunk even though he was pretty clean and no-one else could smell it

When we first moved in there was a mouse in the house that ours cats 'disposed' of, but despite the smell, when we finally got through the boxes and bags of bits, it had made nests in our stored clothes and pee'd on them, and chewed holes in lots of our possesions that needed to be thrown out.

I'm all for doing it a humanely as possible, but wouldn't put up with them in the house.

We used to live on the edge of village, farmland all around and various wildlife/cats.
We had field mice indoors one winter -came in through the air bricks we think. Humane traps dealt with them, but I'm sure they came back in again! Somehow fieldmice don't feel so horrible as housemice, but worst of all were the rats.
Compost heap near shed = NoNo. they had a whale of a time, so we had to get Environmental men out. Bait got rid fairly quickly.

I'm quite happy to share with most creatures and really don't like to kill anything But Rats, Mice and Rabbits - take action at the first sighting. You may only have one this week, but leave them and you'll have a million next year.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

            HI ddl

As far as bait goes, there are so many opinions its perplexing. Try different ones on different traps. Ours actually had a penchant for hard white cheese, but on my fathers lottie, they would only eat chocolate. Peanut butter is supposed to be good but its messy enough without it in my opinion.

Just please remember that cleanliness is sooooo important. Rodents carry weils desease and so wash your hands before you touch anything, particularly your face.

Good luck and let battle commence ( whoooo, do you think you are kidding mister hitler )

                Mouse update

No news! the traps have been down for a few days now - just one fat slug who now RIP because he/she tried to eat the cheese in one of the traps! The other trap is still there, ready and waiting. Good news is, I actually got up enough courage to take a peek! DDL

                  Mousy update!

Guess what happened to me this morning at 630am?

I was going to feed the birds, had my bucket of food ready, put in my feeding thingy, and had a very strange sensation up my sleeve.....bit like ticking or my skin crawling.....

next minute a mouse shoots out of the neck of my tshirt and top!

It wasnt just the mouse that was squeaking! I let out an almighty yell, it flew across the yard and hit the garage wall - to be fair I was screaming that much I didnt see much else! I dropped the glass container which went smash, I ran into the house screaming and ripping my clothing off! Not a pretty sight at that time in a morning I can tell you!

At least Ive found where it/they have been living since I cut off their food supply with metal dustbins!

OH has instructions to get mouse poison asap. Sorry folks, I dont want to do it but something has to be done - I couldnt cope with that again!

It could have been a lot worse, the poor little bugger could have bitten me, as it was I was very lucky!

                  Bernie aka Dexterdog

PS It took my mind off my forthcoming visit to the dentist this afternoon I can tell you!

Oh horror, had to keep calm for five minutes after reading your post. But an extreme way of countering dental anxiety though?
                    Good luck with the extermination.

We live at edge of fields with a wood 400 metres away. Field mice everywhere.. so we leave be.. but in the house we kill off with snap traps baited with white bread (fresh) that they find irresistible.

I love them in the garden.. but not in the greenhouse: so I spent 30 mins blocking all holes...(eaten tomatoes last year:-(

We have no cat (love birds too much) so they live in my compost heaps over winter (and in the hedgerows and in the walls, the field etc... Far less destructive than the suirrels.. except they do pick small green strawberries and leave them in piles...

I just have learned to live with them in the garden.. as we have no choice..

I hate rats: had one climb over me many years ago: fortunately (touch wood) we have none we know of .. maybe the fox catches them?

I know its difficult, but rats, mice, etc are vermin, and wherever you have them they need to be eradicated. They do look sweet, but they spread disease.

We have had them in the loft, but between poison and traps we have got rid of them from there.

I think we still have them in the greenhouse, and this is where, particularly at this time of year, war breaks out!! You have sown your veg seeds, (beans/french/broad/runner), peas, courgettes, cucumbers, etc). One day you look, and they have started to germinate. All of a sudden, overnight your nurtured seedlings have been destroyed. The mice have wreaked havok. As Daffy Duck used to say "you realise (meeses) that this means war".

The little swines have knocked back your growing season for several weeks. They have destroyed your early veg.

That's when the revenge mode starts to kick in, and for what they have cost me, I just want to kill them. No sqeemishness about it. Dalek mode - exterminate, exterminate, exterminate.

Just going to lie down in a darkened room.

hi DDL, we have found that the humane traps work really well with peanut butter, we had at least one in the back garden, tried the mouse house thing to move him to somewhere more appropriate, didnt work, peanut butter works a treat tho, having said that on the lottie we have mice voles and rats, we are using the " please dont eat our seedlings" approach, after all your already eating all the chook food method, not working surprisingly. still trying to find metal bins with clip top lids at affordable prices also small enough for our needs, any ideas?

Ive got some "stuff" from the garden centre to kill the mice. I really dont want to do it, but I know I have to.
Re: Metal bins with lids - I've never seen any with clips, but Ive got a new, metal dustbin with lid and two old, heavy duty metal bins with big heavy rubber lids. Dont know if that helps YB.
Right.....I'm off to do the evil deed.

                                I screamed like a girl!

I was digging over my big compost heap yesterday, and suddenly this thing shot out - I hadn't registered what it was but I was screaming anyway! Mouse! Next thought...I'm not scared of mice, why am I screaming? Laughing about it with my neighbours who'd heard the commotion, same thing happened again: another mouse, another scream! I'm so embarrassed
