  • Geting rid of flies

    Hello all
Ive taken in my plants in for the winter and left them by a windowsill, most of them are fruit saplings, but now i have noticed that when i water some plants they have little wor like things in them. I think these worm like things are flies since i have a lot of them around the window. They look like fruit flies but there are no fruit in here.So how are they surving and how can i get rid of them without harming the plants.

Could you post a picture of them? It might help with identifcation.

they are fungus gnats......see a previous thread above.

Try watering from the bottom [into a saucer] as they live in the top layer of the soil.

Do as Zaz says and you'll get fewer of them, but still some. An old-fashioned fly paper will catch the remainders.
Or squish them against the glass with your fingers

Yh thats what they look like, i have opened the window to let some out, some have gone out but the smart ones have stayed inside. I have now lined the top of my plants with paper, tissue and thin cloths to prevent anymore from escaping aswell as laying there eggs in. Plus the water can get through,

Water from the bottom - into a saucer. Then you won't get them at all.

Where the plants are kept is very humid and misty so water gets to the surface anyway.

I have a butterwort on the window cill growing in peat and watered with rainwater, hoovers fungus gnats up and loves the humid atmosphere. As its a carnivourous plant it's self fertillizing too.
pretty flowers like a mini gloxinia in season too.
