Just noticed on the back of the can it says it can be used to spray on pots to stop slugs climbing them...

Anyone tried this? Not sure how you'd stop it getting into the soil after running off like, but wondering if it's worth a go.

Have thought of creating a water "ring" around the pots to stop the beggers climbing them this year!

Ive have tried vaseline(petrolium jelly) arround trees to stops ants runing up and down
Dont judge a plant by it's pot.

Will give the WD40 a go on the raised beds this year.
The other idea I had was painting them with glue and sticking on sharp sand but I think it would wash off !

Have you seen the copper tape solution?

With the price of copper being what it is at the moment, I'd expect it to be a fairly pricey solution, but apparently it works.

Some how I don't think it would put them off, there pretty resilient little sods... so are snails, This isn't my photo it's one of "Lettucegrower!" from of the wildlife photo thread. If they'll tackle a cactus, grit stuck to the side of a pot's a breeze....sorry .

Did you ever get into one of those situations where you think, "well, turning back now would take just as long as carrying on!".
            I reckon that's what Mr Snail's thinking

I use the copper tape on my windowsill troughs and so far it seems to work - at least until the so-and-sos learn to absail down an overhanging leaf and avoid the tape. One warning with the tape though, it can cut your fingers unless you are very careful.

If I used copper I would have to install CCTV ! There is a scrap man coming down our road every half an hour at the moment !

I've tried the copper tape with no success at all and after catching that one on the cactus last year this whole fight against the slugs needs a re-think. One thing that always works for me is sitting my hostas on raised feet in a large dish/saucer of water. They just can't cross it, just need to remember to keep it topped up over summer.

Yep, I used copper tape.. I found one very determined slug that I kept as a 'lab rat' for a variety of methods..

I placed him at the bottom of the plant pot, went straight over the tape.

I then curled the bottom edge of the tape up, so it was like a knife edge, repeated, went straight over.

I then crinkle cut the tape edge, same story...

Fair doos, he put up with a lot. I almost felt a bit bad dicing him up and putting the bits of him on the fence edging for the birds to eat.

I've just thought - I have a load of dead bramble stems... I may staple them onto the edge of the beds to see if that helps here.... not grown anything here yet, so not sure if I will have the same population of slugs (i.e. China had nothing on my garden!) that I did in Cardiff.

On digging the bed soil though, when I removed a tree - I noticed a wire worm.. not sure if that's a bad sign or not.

He went over the wall mind.

he/she - not sure what sex, would rather know I killed a bloke slug than a girl one hehe

                      ...failing that, there's always pellets.

True, but are there organic pellets? I also have a young'un - i don't want her going out when she learns to walk thinking that she can pick and eat from the veg beds, and munching on a pellet (or a slug )

I have heard that upturned grapefruit or orange peel is supposed to attract them but I found beer traps to be the most successfull.

I tried the slug gel stuff around my lavender- as the little sods would leave the leaves and clumb up and eat the flowers - and they loved it, infact I had even more slugs than before!!!
