  • Vine Weevil Help

We lost all our strawberries to vine weevil last year. They are in one of those big strawberry planter pots, which I'm now in the process of clearing out to plant out some more strawberry runners. The old compost in the pot is full of vine weevil grubs so I'm not sure what to do with it all as it's quite a large volume! I have measures in place for this year so once the pot has been scrubbed out I'll try to prevent the same happening again, but I just dont know what the best thing is to do with the compost. If I put it anywhere in the graden presumably I'm just making truble for myself later on as the grubs become adults but I can't put it out with my garden waste as they dont take soil.

    Help!!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

Put it in a black bin liner and put it out with the house hold waste, but DON'T re use the compost, even if you hand pick out all the grubs, you'll never see all the egg's that are left behind, I have big problems with vine weevils, they cause so much damage, look at your other thread to see what you could do to try and prevent this happening again...Good Luck with them.

Before I got chooks I used to put all old compost in a sack and add ***** fluid. It was fine to put on the garden a few months later. Now all old compost is chucked in the run for the girls to pick over first.

I chuck all my compost from pots onto the allotment and let the birds have a feast, if you havent got an allotment put it on your garden. Whatever you do wash out the pots and start again with new compost.

I'm very sceptic about vine weevils, there's no way I'd re-use the compost, as I said you can't see the eggs and they lay hundred's of them. And as Jackie has said, give your pots a good disinfect before using them again.
