Just was digging out the side garden ready for new beds, and I came across 3 caterpillers.. I think they were anyway. 2 were larger - perhaps 20cm long, orange heads, with what looked like legs near the head. Rest of the body was pearly-white. Other one was small, presumably a baby one. Are these cabbage whites? Gross looking things. I got rid of all three anyway.
I also found a wire-worm in the patch of soil I've put the bed on, does this spell bad things? :/ Again, I got rid of it - the area was grassed over, but recently was covered with compacted soil after doing a lot of work in that garden.. only noticed them AFTER I'd removed the turf, dug down two spade depths, lined with news paper (have LOADS of it lying around) -wetting, turf on top upside down and backfilled with the soil I'd dug out.... typical! The bed is quite large, so I can't really move it anywhere else (well probably could, but it'd not be lying N-S then - and it'll ruin my idea for the garden heh).
The soil seems very good - it's rich, depsite all the roots in it after I'd gone through and remove there was plenty of humus, hardly any stones, and LOADS of earthworms.. I'm talking about say 20 odd per sq meter. Infact, I saw three that were the biggest I'd ever seen, scared me, thought I was pulling out a sloe worm or something! Proper beefy beggers!
