  • Cabbage white butterfly already?

I've seen 2 white butterflies in the last week or so up at the lottie.

Could it be the dreaded cabbage white already?

I'd seen them this time last year, but none here so far (it won't be long though).

I have a great way to catch them (but it's not for the squeamish): they like to sunbathe on verbena bonariensis; creep up behind them and snatch them really quickly. Stamp on it if you can bear to

And in spite of the hailstones (yesterday and today)and the little flurry of snow (yesterday afternoon), the little b*ggers are out and about up here too.

                And here too...

My mrs frown upon me belting it to the ground and then stamping on it so hard I hurt my ankle

                "Why kill butterflies" she said.

I was tempted to reply go on here and ask

It was fluttering all over my onions/garlic - seemed to be looking for something - brassicas? I've only small turnips/pak choi at the mo so hopefullyit didnt smell them!

(damn it best go and check tomorrow - something has been nibbing at them)

We "steamed" a green caterpiller that was in the PSB the other day , I think he must of over wintered, though I'm very suprised he survived the big freeze. Anyway no more Broccoli for that one!
Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

I guess you will all know this, but just to be sure, it's only the "whites" that eat Brassicas. Other butterflies (including Orange Tips. The females don't have the orange tips) are harmless and should be left alone.
