  • Daft Person Alert: Greenfly?

Came home from work today to see a few tiny green flying things jumping all over my rasberry shoots/leaves.

Is this green fly? I managed to kill most that I saw. Is it too early for green fly?

    Hmph!

I squished a load of green fly at the weekend, they were on the new shoots on my strawberry runners nasty little critters.

If they were jumping about they could be leaf hoppers

I found greenfly on my lettuce and strawberries plants the other day so I sprayed them with soapy water then squished them.

House Martins were having a feast on my rambling Rose. I guess that's what they were munching on.

Will soapy water affect the eating quality of the rasberries? Growing organically here, so dont really want to pump whatever nasty stuff is in soap into the soil if poss

It's only a very weak solution Chris & I believe that it helps the soil/compost absorb water. I read somewhere that if your compost has dried out to the extent that it won't absorb water then add a drop of WU liquid.

Are they harmful to the plants?

I blasted a load with the hose earlier and then mushed them into the wood around the beds. Felt good.

Well I wondered why the ladybirds were so active and then I found out bigtime on my roses! 2 or 3 generations of greenfly already!!

I have a plague of greenfly. I kid ye not, there are billions of the damn things. How much harm can they do?

My beetroot seedlings are covered, amongst other things.

I have the same problem, they were all over my courgette flowers and strawb plants this morning, nestled deep into the tender new grow. Sprayed them with WU liquid and water and brought all my rocket indoors as I did that with one plant last week and it's doing much better. My roses were also covered.

I can see how it might become obsessive. I'll be out there before work tomorrow to see if there's any more!

I have so many there's not even any point in spraying them - they'd be replaced immediately. My shed was absolutely covered in them, for some reason.

We've only had the usual amount, and on the usual plants: roses mostly. No blackfly at all so far

This morning we have a small flock of blue tits picking over the camellia, so I guess there're aphids on that too
