  • Blackberry bushes

Am trying to reclaim some land back for planting, unfortunately lots of blackberry bushes. Does anyone have experience of clearing these? Do I need to use weed killer? If so can anyone recomend one.

i had and still have loads of them next to my plot, what i did to control them was cut down very low to the ground and then dig them out ,or you can spray with glyphosate but be careful as anything green will be killed ,it takes a few weeks to die but its very good ,best of luck

If you want to use glyphosate, you must apply it to lush green growth (ie, don't cut back the top-growth). It probably won't kill the roots, so you'll have to dig those out anyway.

Personally, I cut off the top-growth & burned it, then dug out the roots. Some will always come back, but will give up eventually if you keep pulling them.

I agee with the above - cut them down to the ground and then immediately dig the roots out.
There'll be a few bits of root left behind that will re-grow after a few months, but if you keep at them, you will eventually get rid of them.
The same applies to persistent weeds.

My current veg plot was reclaimed from a "wild corner" - it was full of all kinds of deep-rooted/persistent weeds and brambles/blackberries. I had to dig it over several times to get rid of everything (had to dig down to a couple of feet in some places), but it's now a great little plot.
        Perseverance will be rewarded.

Cut back the top growth, dry it and burn it. Dig the roots out (not an easy job, but worth it). Had loads on my lottie when I took it over - now the only ones are the ******** that run in from next door plot.
