  • bindweed growing through paving.

my elderly neighbour has loads of bindweed growing through her paved patio.

She asked me what was the best thing to use to get rid of it ( taking up the paving and digging it out is not an option)

She has a cat (so do I 0 and she wants to make sure that whatever is put to kill the bindweed doesn't harm either the cats or wildlife.

    Any suggestions?

I'd go for glyphosate. Keep the cat out of the way when spraying and until it dries. As it does say there is no need to keep animals or children of the area.

Another alternative is just to keep pulling up the growth and eventually exhaust its roots. This does require someone who is in a condition to be able to bend down and do it.

It also means doing it every 3 days or so and over a very long period, think months and years, not weeks. One or two weeks missed and you are back to the start.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Let it grow and give it a 'false sense of security'. When you have a nice clump use Roundup and then put the clump in a plastic bag fastened with string.Leave it until the top growth is good and dead then take off the bag and pull away the dead stuff.

Safer for the cat and I find that it really does kill it stone dead. You may have to do it a bit at a time if you have lots.

I pour boiling water on my paving stone weeds: every time I boil a kettle or make some pasta, I pour the remaining water on the dandies etc
