Help to identify white raised lumps on sweet peas and tomato leaves?

Hello there, can anyone identify this creature? And should I be worried about it?
This photo shows an infestation on my sweet peas (which are now a very busy restaurant for ladybird larvae:-) ) There are also some on my tomatoes, though less here so far. Are they friend or foe? and should I do anything about it? Hope the image comes out ok.
Any pointers gratefully received.

did these things ever hatch out? I'd be interested to see what they looked like after, I googled and googled and googled and found absolutely nothing that resembled this...

Plants seem to be ok, but nothing hatched yet, I'm pretty sure its some kind of egg case. I might even say it looks like something came along made and egg pouch filled it up and then died right there. Its not easy to see but I think those black bits are loads and loads of legs. Bit creepy.

Yeah me too Taff - drew a blank.
I hope they hatch in next day or two as I'm away next week. Will ask the house sitter to to take photos if they do. Hope that's not beyond the call of duty!

Incidentally, I have found one or two which definitely have a magnolia-coloured (that's magnolia in the painting sense not the gardening sense) adult-aphid-looking creature sitting on the egg sac, though these are not alive. Also a couple are on my plastic greenhouse so I can see that inside the sac is a little black round something. Sadly these are all too small to photograph for you.
