  • Rabbits - does the plastic orange mesh stuff work?

    Our plot has rabbits galore.

People put up the orange plastic mesh stuff - does it work?

I would have thought that they'd munch straight through it.

Yes - and the holes look big enough for bunnies to get through.

They do munch straight through it (in fact I think they rather like the taste!) and it's fairly short lived anyway as it's not ultra violet inhibited!

          What do you recommend?

          Wire of some sort?

I don't have the rabbits Johnty, but I have had the pesky deer !
I think chicken wire will keep them out, but you have to put it 2 feet down or they will burrow under it, or it may be easier to turn it at the bottom at right angles and continue it 2 feet out from the edge, They won't start burrowing further back than that - well I don't think. And, they can jump about 4 feet, so put some height on it. (The pesky deer can jump 8 feet !)

So what do you do about the deer?

                Get yourself a air rifle

The only way you will control them effectively is by Ferreting them or a pre silenced air rifle if it is a council owned site ask them to get some one in to clear them or if the rabbits are coming of farm land ask the farmer if you can shoot em or give me a call i will do it free of charge. I am fully insured discreet most activaity is at night or early morning so you can bag some to go with your veg. The law states i can shoot em with permission from the land owner also if it a serious problem you can ask the rabbits to be removed by defra who in turn will then bill the offending land owner hope this helps Right now the does are carrying young and before long their will be easter bunnies all over the place.Rabbits will always find a way in either by digging or jumping i have seen desperate measures by farmers who have electric fences up protectinging crops.

It is a council owned plot but the rabbits come from far and wide. A chemical works and a gasworks nearby are overrun, and they cover acres. Not sure shooting will work.

Still I'm growing spuds as a first crop on this wasteland of a plot and I am assured they won't eat them!

Hello Johnty, I had to fence my ground to a height of 8' to keep the b***** deer out. They eat EVERYTHING. And what they don't eat they trample all over. And the bucks bark all the trees with their lovely little antlers. And they're not the least bit timid and were right up to my door and looking in the window with my lovely flowers hanging out of their mouths. And I wanted to kill them - but it wasn't in my heart. So I fenced them out. (Interesting legal point - you can fence them out - but you can't fence them in)
