white/pink roots with dark stripes?

Hi

when digging over among the usual roots there were some quite thick ones, not quite as thick as a pencil. They were pale pink/white with dark stripes every few inches.

Sorry didn't get a picture.

Any ideas what it might be?

I don't think any of the weed roots I've come across have had pink stripes

Dandelions, no. Docks, no. Nettles, no. Bindweed, no. Horsetail, no. Creeping buttercup, no. Couch grass, no...

What plants are growing around the area?

Did the dark stripe go in a ring round the root, or down the length of the root?
If it was a ring it would be the leaf node.
Pencil thickness - hmm I've had bindweed roots that thick before now - and they were whitish pink. Did the root snap easily? Bindweed does.

Can't help with identification but am just amazed that you have ground that you can dig at the moment - our's needs to be chiseled

no, not digging at the moment!! was a couple of weeks ago. by usual roots I mean grass, docks etc. Patch previously had potatoes in and was grass field before that. stripes went round the root, like a narrow band every few inches. similar thickness to the thicker white grass roots, but seemed unusual.

Will have to try and get a picture, when the white stuff goes!!
