  • Next doors ivy....

it has been left to grow as it please, we dig it out as it comes over, but we are fighting a losing battle!

We are having a fedge put in, but I don't want it to be swamped by ivy.

The house next door is vacant at the moment and wont have anyone living there for a couple of weeks, it is a local authority house.

What can I do, besides digging it out? (I've got enough of my own to do!)

Could I paint weed killer on the leaves?

I'd really like to enjoy my fedge without seeing the dreaded Ivy creeping through! I've got it on the other side of my garden from the neighbours which we leave for the birds

Spray it with Roundup! But don't tell anyone I told you!

Cut it back at the root before anyone else moves in. You can always say it was killed by the bad weather.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

will cutting it back at the root work? Or would I have to dig all the root out?

I'm very tempted to go the roundup route if not

Thank you both for the advice

Better still, cut it right down to the roots, then, in a month, spray off any new growth with Roundup!

You would find it more effective if you paint it on rather than spraying. Spray tends to just run off the surface of the leaves.

Someone once suggested mixing it with wallpaper paste, to make it stickier! D

I have also heard of using washing-up liquid to make it stickier, too.

I agree, spraying those waxy leaves just doesn't work. You could make a shallow 'bath' of glypho and dip whole branches of the ivy in it - I did that with bindweed and it works a treat

I had a bad case of overgrown ivy on the lotty (4 foot deep & 6 foot high it was)
I sheared off most of it, dug out as many roots as I could, and now it's manageable: I prune it with the shears every year. I wouldn't remove it, because the birds like nesting in it.

Had the same trouble when I moved in here (about 18months ago) neighbour at the bottom had left his ivy to grow all over the fence, all over our garden, it had pulled the fence down and started growing everywhere - bit like a triffid!! ()
It took ages to clear out of our garden - some of the roots were over six foot long and 6 inches wide!! (I also sprayed round up over my fence when they weren't in )- then we had to put new fences in, but I still found some trying to creep underneath.
I like the idea of using wallpaper paste - sounds good to me.
