  • Grape Hyacinth

Hi everyone, I'm plagued by Grape Hyacinths in my borders, someone obviously thought it was a good idea to introduce a few.

Is there any way anyone has found to remove them.

Weedkillers have little effect, at the moment i'm digging everything and using a bakers riddle to remove them, this is taking forever, as i'm trying to keep the tulips and daffs that are there as well.

    Help!!

Digging them up is the only way I know. Even if the bulb is about a foot down, it will still manage to flower. They are amazing, and very prolific. I have a customer whose garden was overrun with them, and she hates them. I have been digging them up for three years now, and there's still a few hiding under her concrete path, that appear each year. I can't get at them without major excavations, so I just pull the leaves up when they appear. Hopefully this will weaken them. Good luck!

I have another customer who adores them. They are currently in full bloom and smell lovely! Personally, I like a small patch of them, but they do multiply extremely quickly, especially in loose sandy soil. You are right about the really small size of some of the bulbs, that's why it's taking me so long to get rid of them!

We have them, they are nice in small quantities but keeping them contained is a nightmare - stick to pots!

I hope you didn't really tip rubbish into your neighbours garden!

Ahh. I always wondered what those flowers were around my wall. Can't decide if I like them or not. They're not multiplying fast, but it may be because they're in shade for most of the day, bar sunrise

I like them where they are in our garden - in the trough along the back edge of our decking.

It seems that Bean likes them too - he pulls all the bloom off and sprinkles them everywhere. Not sure if they've made his hands all iffy though - came out in a rash later that day, and the skin on his thumbs is peeling and cracked. Anyone ever heard of an allergic reaction to them?

Only back-ache from digging the blighters up!

In their defence (if I dare) they do smell lovely, and add an extra zing of colour growing among other bulbs, in a wooded setting.

I love them! I planted five little clumps in the garden at the old house about 4 years ago, and they behave themselves beautifully. The clumps have probably doubled in size, but they aren't going crazy. I like picking the flowers for the house. I haven't got round to putting any in at the new house yet, but I certainly will.

If anyone wants to buy them off me i will happily sell them!! I wouldnt have any sympathy for my neighbours, footballs coming over the fence landing on my veg patch(and greenhouse) loud music, door slamming, shouting, screaming...and to think we moved into this quiet cul-de-sac to live quietly with all the old folk.... Off topic sorry.

seriously if you're thinking of getting them, keep an eye on them, they are strong little spreaders!!
