  • if slugs and snails could eat anything...

    ...what would they eat?

I've just lost some seedlings to slugs, which has woken me up again to the plight/fight ahead.

This year I'd, like to try using bait/decoy/sacrificial plants to try and get the slimy So-and-so's to leave the things I want to eat well alone.

Does anyone have any clue what (if anything) they will slide past my lettuce, spinach and (holy-gail stuff here) my seedlings to eat?

What do you mean IF? They DO eat everything.

If you feed them a sacrificial plant, they will breed, increase in numbers and then move on to your other plants anyway

If you don't want to poison them, then trap them (in the daytime they will congregate under half grapefruits, old slabs etc). Gather them up, crush them or feed to chickens/ducks

        TS...
The fact that they do eat everything is exactly why I'm thinking of sacrificials. I wouldn't think squeezing in a few slug-delicacies would encourage breeding any more than the normal crops do... but this way maybe I'd get less damage to my crops and still be trapping the blighters (with associated grisly death) anyway.

I'm 2 cabbages and 2 sprouts down already and I'm only just getting seriously going now. Tomatoes aren't into true leaves yet but I know I'll have a fight on for them too when they are too big to keep indoors any more.

I've only just realised I already posted a thread like this.
What a dolt. I must have been SHATTERED when I started the other one... I don't remember it at all.

          Sorry about that.
