On a serious note, "1970s gardening books were suggesting making a nicotine insecticide by boiling up cigarette butts. This would not only kill pests but also beneficial insects as well. The liquid was highly poisonous and a few swigs from the lemonade bottle it was stored in would be enough to kill a child"

So these aren't the same pea and bean weevils that eat your dried beans in storage? (The ones you're supposed to kill by freezing your dried beans for a couple of days)
The problem with rounded personalities is they don't tesselate.
These weevils don't go near the seeds (beans). The adults eat the leaves, lay eggs on the soil and the larvae eat the plant roots. They only attack peas and broad beans: http://www.which.co.uk/documents/pdf...ems-151476.pdf
The only dried beans I've had affected have been the Violetta that came from Africa (T&M). They came with a free gift! Well about a dozen free gifts actually: broad bean & beetle | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Ooh - I thought it was ants eating mine as I do have an ants nest near the pea row. They haven't touched the broadies though - only the peas. I was going to give them a nice shower with some very dilute ***** fluid. Would that deter the weevils too?

Oh good. I wasn't looking forward to having to freeze them!

Nope, it's illegal to use ***** as an insecticide: it's to be used as a (patio, tools etc) cleaning agent only
But then again isn't it technically illegal to use weak soapy water to get rid of aphids too
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
