Mine came out from a few years under concrete, Chris so I'm afraid the answer is no, you can't shade it out!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

No unfortunately, AFAIK contractors will stem inject glyphso and it usually takes more than 1 visit, this is the number one nasty, grows from 7gm, will root to about 5m deep and 7m wide, concrete is not a barrier, this stuff costs councils millions per year to control and it has been estimated it will cost billions to eradicate (if at all possible). Truly sorry for anyone who has this. As mentioned it requires proper disposal as even the soil its in cannot be tipped at the loccal dump.

Mine comes through from next door! Dreadful stuff.
Unfortunately the only thing that seems to get rid of it is glyphosate

                    Wowsers.

                    *I'm usually totally organic but....

Sorry chuck - but I'd be paying someone to come and use some super strength stuff to clear the decks - and then start afresh. You are never going to get rid of that without a proper identification and a professional to deal with it.

Whether it is JK or not - and the leaves do look different at this stage - you have a problem that needs dealing with or you are never going to free your land of this!

Have you googled Japanese Knotweed pics, and seen if the mature plants look the same as yours once it has grown a little?

Yes I have and they look similar but not identical.

I'm not sure whether that is JK or not as the stems in the information I've read are described as reddish and yours don't look red to me. Here is a guide to identification and eradication from Devon council. hopefully it will help.
In any case I would recommend you find an enviromental specialist to help with identifying whatever this horrible plant is.
                        Good luck.

                          I don't think it's Japanese knotweed.
JK is growing by the roadside all over here and the stems are more purple and the leaves more heart shaped.

Why not take some to your local plant nursery- or a large garden centre and ask to speak with their head gardener???

Worth a go...they'll be able to give you advice on how to get rid of it too

And although I wouldn't usually recommend weedkillers, in this instance I would say that you have no option. It will take farmer strength Round-up or similar, so might be a good idea to get a licensed person in to deal with it, but again, your local authority might be the people to help with this.

You have my sympathy, and I thought horsetail was bad....
There is no such thing as a notifiable weed in UK law.
These pages cover ragwort, about which there are loads of myths and exaggerations, but the principle is the same.
