Thanks everyone for the replies, I haven't checked here for a while and didn't know there were any more replies. I am on holidays at the moment but will take some photos when I get back, cheers.

Im back now, will take some pictures soon, I think the weed is 'Scutch Grass' I saw it described on tv and sounds exactly like what I have.

Scutch grass is aother name for couch grass - which is really a grass - the leaves in your first post are too thick for that. Plus which you can get rid of couch after a season or two of pulling out - my plot was thick with it and it is virtually all gone (I just have the rest of the weeds to deal with now!)
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

this might be a silly suggestion but could it be mint?

The leaves do look like peppermint.
Here are the roots- not a very close up one though....

Wouldn't the smell make it very obvious though????

Bumping again - I visited a friend's new plot last week and it was covered in knotweed. Totally different from this but it reminded me of this thread.

I really hope you got it identified and I'm sure most of us would appreciate any update to your plight.

Looks like Frankie isn't around any more. For a minute I thought it might be Himalayan Balsam but the roots aren't the same.

It's frustrating, I'd like to know what happened too.
