  • Potato problem, can some help a new grower?

    Hi all,

I have just been up my allotment and discovered something has happened to my potatoes. Is it anything to worry about?

    Pic below.

    Thanks all.

It's frost damage. They'll recover but it'll set them back a little. Don't worry, it's not too bad. Next time there's a frost you can cover them in fleece or earth them up lots

How odd, I didnt think we had had a frost down here. I will keep an eye on the weather more and cover them if need be.

      Thanks

Vicky has nailed that for you on all counts. Do earth your spuds up. As well as protecting the plants, it also helps sort out the weed growth.

I'm suprised it was frost as its been lovely out our way recently - nights have been positively balmy - I;d pick off the very worst of the leaves and cover them over with more soil/compost and see what happens - they're quite tenancious and may well recover.

          good luck

Had exactly the same happen to mine and like you we had no frost. The lowest temperature was about 6 degrees, but some of the old timers at the allotment said that even at that relatively high temperature the wind across the allotment can do this.

Although it looks awful it is not the end of the world, as had been said. Fingers crossed that all will be fine
