  • Whitefly Problems

Hi, Can anybody give me advice on how to get rid of whitefly which are mainly on my cucumbers. The tomatoes don't seem to have too much . They are both growing in tubs in a small polytunnel, also in the same space i am growing peppers, chillies, squash and melons..are they apart of the problem or something else??
    Gratefull for any advice

Marigolds are recommended - see the companion planting thread in the Vegging Out section.

Odd that the whitefly are mainly on your cucumbers, they normally love tomatoes! Ok, what I have found effective in the last couple of years is to buy some of those yellow sticky hanging strips, you can buy them from any garden centre.. you hang them just above your young plants, and as the plants grow you move the strips up....the yellow attracts the whitefly......and you could try growing fennel in your garden, greenfly loves this, and hoverfly and ladybirds which are both Mother Nature's very own pest controllers also love the aphids, greenfly and whitefly and happily munch on them...

I was told by a friend to put some soapy water in a spray bottle and spray affected plants with it will take a couple of spraying to get rid of it all but i am told it is quite effective

Marigolds for me too, they look good amonst the plants and do a better job than sqashing the bugs

Marigolds have done nothing for mine, soapy spray on the other hand did, but back to square one again with the infestation plus now multi-discoloured leaves and blackfly moving in I think my Brussels will struggle this year.

Squirt them off with your garden hose, which is as effective as anything else.
                  I love growing tomatoes.

Strangely my mint pots have attracted huge numbers of aphids and whitefly this year and they are sat right next to tomatoes, with none so far. Not sure if this is meant to work like this (and a bit of a pain as I just found a good recipe for mint) but it's going ok so far!
