  • HEEEEEEEELP...Green Fly, ARRRRRRRRRRRR.

HEEEEEEEEELP...Is anyone else experiencing the massive swarms of green fly?

Everything is covered in the dam things...tomatoes, beans, peas, squash...everything, even my herbs are suffering a covering .
My poor little fingers have never been as busy squishing the nasty little beasties , grrrrrrrrr.

Has anyone got any fool safe way's of zapping the things.... barring in mind my garden is organic. I've got lot's of ladybird larvae, so I don't want to use anything that will hurt them.
I'm sure someone posted a recipe for chilli spray, but I'm not sure if that wouldn't upset mi nice bug's.

Yes, swarms here as well (or least a very large quantity of the things).

Thankfully, we appear to have the entire countrys' supply of sparrows nesting in our hedge and they're having a feast and the little flower bed that I sited in the veg patch is alive with hover flies etc, so, hopefully, I've a good sized, natural army working for me

      Hi GN,

I made mention yesterday that I was thinking of buying one of those battery powered, tennis racquet shaped bug zappers to try and reduce our infestation. I bought one this morning and have been using it around the garden when I see a cloud of greenfly - it works really well. I remember Aldi were selling some last week: ALDI - Thursday Special Buys 30th June 2011 The one I got wasn't from Aldi, but as long as the mesh is fine enough it might be worth trying.

I've just used an organic spray which I found in the 'Gardening Box' his nibbs had placed high up on a shelf in the workshop, from Bayer Garden - called organic Bug Free (it's a purple bottle). It's supposed to deal with green, white (and I'm guessing blackfly) as well as spider mites, so I'm giving it a go on my veg.

Might be worth a google to see if it's something to consider and I'll let you know how it deals with the blighters on my patch

UPDATE: Just check the sweetcorn I sprayed earlier and then the tomatoes and the runner beans and finally the leeks, just to make sure I wasn't imagining it and ALL the green/black fly, where they have come into contact with the bug free spray are dead!!! Only those on the undersides of leaves I didn't spray (will do them tomorrow) are still alive.

I'm not saying it's a wonder product but I will be getting some more of this I reckon.

Thanks for that Reet. We had a good old storm last night and another today. It looks like it's damped down the swarms of green fly, but time will tell (fingers crossed). I came across a small clump of what I thought were black fly...they turned out to be ladybird larvae, so I'm a much happier ninger today
