  • Something that's puzzling me..

Right, I know this is an age old question, pertaining to weeds but I'm dumbfounded and I can imagine you guys can lend me a hand, or at least confirm my suffering as uniform amongst all gardeners.

I've watched numerous gardening shows, but for the point I'm trying to convey, I'll take Monty Dom's garden - how is it so weed free?
I mean, his garden (if you can call it that) is simply immaculate - does he simply spend 9am-5pm weeding? Is it his job to work in his own garden? He appears to use no mulch on his vegetable patch, and it's purely mud/compost, no unwanted weeds!

Forgive me, it's just, I simply cannot rid my garden of weeds. I literally dug up 18-22 inches of soil when I removed my tomato's, examined every part of it removing seedlings, suspicious roots and everything else - a total purge of life (or so I was convinced). Two weeks later, and boom - I've got weeds sprouting up once again.

Hopefully it wont be too much of an issue as my green manure is quickly catching up (and don't worry, I'm not thinking the green manure is the weeds) and shall hopefully kill it off.. but it seems whenever the ground is left for a simple week or two, nature steps in to ensure another days weeding.

Help me Grapes, you're my only hope.

The cynic in me say's that Mr.Don & other gardeners of his ilk, have an unseen & unsung team of minions to undertake the lesser &/or non-televised aspects of soil & plant care.

Could be totally wrong though & he may indeed be a horticultural god

I used to work for Central TV as a contract armourer. Having seen what goes on behind the scenes of Tv work I firmly believe he will have very well paid help. They might work to his plan and instructions but they will be there, after all money is no object to TV people.

I particularly liked the one where he went & "dug up" some young cabbages from the "nursery bed" (also totally weed free),they came out so easily & the root ball was strangely flower pot shaped Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I do that commentary throughout as well....

They are weed free because they are on TV.

Don't worry Chris. Weeds are a fact of life - a bit like death and taxes!

Every time you disturb the soil, you will encourage another seed to germinate. It may have lain dormant for years, waiting for such a moment. Some seeds can lay dormant for 200 years and still be viable!

I spend most of my days hand-weeding flower beds for people. It is a bit like the old 'painting the Forth Bridge' scenario, although the weeds do get fewer each year as they're now not allowed to seed. However, more seeds blow in from neighbours' gardens, so there will still be something for me to tackle. I don't moan - it keeps me employed!

In my veg garden, I prefer to mulch. When you spend your working hours removing weeds, you don't want to come home and start again.

Same thing with some of the glossy gardening books and catalogues - no weeds. I think weeds are very camera shy and hide when they see one.

It's relaxing to watch in the evenings, much better than some of the dross that's on the telly.

I imagine its a bit like when John Wilson took a trip to Ardleigh reservoir, and managed a carp on his first visit...a very very tough task (although i did it too! lol)

Turns out his 'team' had visited the same spot he had fished everyday pre-baiting...the fish were waiting for him! lol

why does it always come back to fish...

'Contract' as not permanently employed only fetched in when required and then paid stupid money for little or no work.

'Armourer' To supply firearms/shotguns and ancillaries, ammo/holsters/gun cabinets etc as required by the production buyer. To advise on the realistic use of said items. To make sure the actors knew what they were doing when using the weapons etc, i.e. the correct stance when firing a handgun. And foremost SAFETY to make sure they did not hurt themselves or anyone else especially ME.

Qualifications access to a large range of equipment and being an ex military instructor gunner helps.
