  • Field mouse removal

Not technically a pest or anything to do with our veg patch but thought i'd post in here. Our living room has a guest and we would like to evict him or her ideally still alive without harm. I'm actually quite happy for him to stay but my wife is already complaining of the number ones and number twos it might be doing

Anyway, how can i get it out? Its way to fast to catch even though it treks from one corner of the room (behind the fish tank) to the other (behind the book case), there would be no way i could throw a towel or something over it so i'm thinking of some sort of trap that shuts behind itself but i'm no bear grylls so any ideas?

get a flowerpot and a broom handle for deathless removal but hurry up or it'll die and stink the place out.

I've been told that laying a wellington boot down on its side does the job. Chase the little fellow and it will run into the boot to hide and then you just pick the boot up and tip the mouse out outside (well away from the house). I've never tried it as OH uses the same method as Two Sheds. It was suggested to me by someone who's cats bring live mice in to provide entertainment.

We've used these in the past and they do work well.

Yups that's the one. there are traps that can be used to catch the little blighters alive though. I'm almost certain that Two wests and Elliots have them.

We used the one Bren suggests.
Worked a treat- but you need to check twice a day.

We live on a large housing estate and there's nowhere nearby that I could reasonably release them to (we're in a town).
I used to be all "live and let live" about mice, until they ate their way through Mr TS's work clothes and all my stored potatoes. I don't want them eating all our camping equipment too (sleeping bags etc) so now I kill them. It's quick and they get a lovely last supper of melted Snickers

One of my cats brought one in once- it scuttled up an arm of my hollow fire fender - the cat was pawing at it in the exact spot where it was lurking. The fender was dismantled and the little chap tipped out into the wild. Cat immediately lost interest and fell asleep.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

The welly boot certainly works - as does any closed piping that a mouse can easily rush into. Field mice rarely come into a houses, although cats will certainly bring them in as "toys". Are house mice disappearing ? It is many years since I have met one, But woodmice, fieldmice, shrews and voles
are still quite common - certainly here in the country. Long may they thrive, as they are important in the food chain for many large birds.
