  • Cock chafer grub in new beds

    Hi all.

I'm starting a kitchen garden at my school & have started lifting rectangles of turf for the new beds. While I was digging, I found lots of creamy coloured grubs under the turf, which the robin hovering around was grateful for!

After a bit of research, I've found that they were the cock chafer grubs, which appear to be different from the standard chafer grub and cannot be treated with nematodes, apparently.

I'm worried about putting anything into the beds while they're still lurking. Does anybody know whether they'll cause a problem to onions and garlic? Or, indeed, any other veg I plant in the future?

    Cheers,

    Niall

I found the same creatures in some new beds I've just dug, and asked about them here.

The upshot was that they don't like cultivated soil and will go away after a while, and digging in this season exposes them to cold, which will kill them. They apparently aren't as much of a problem for veg growers as they are for lawns.

Thanks very much for that, appreciate it. I didn't see your post at all, I'd even done a search to find something about them! Sorry about that.
