  • Redback Spiders

There was an article today on the news service of my ISP indicating that an Australian spider - The Redback- capable of causing death to humans has been discovered living in locations around the UK. notably in Preston, Coventry, Wales and Scotland. They are able to survive our climate by invading centrally-heated homes although some were even found hiding in a crate in a factory in Lancashire. Richard Moseley, from the British Pest Control Association apparently said "These insects are on the move now."

    Insects?

The article advises that the pea-sized spider is capable of delivering painful bites which cause respiratory failure, swelling, fever and chest pains and if you suspect you have been bitten it is advised you apply an icepack to the area, seek medical attention and try to find the insect who bit you for identification.

Is the spider going to tell you "I'm an Australian Redback Spider Bruce" or eeven worse, are we expected to ask the spider who we are?

As you can see, the standard of English is abysmal. There is reference to spiders and insects "Who" when it should clearly be "that" or "which" and when talking about spiders, referring to them as insects when they are arachnids not insects.

Does anyone else share my sense of despair at the level of education of those trying to educate us via the media?

    P.S. it's raining and I'm bored

I like the idea of them hiding in a crate, like they did it deliberately....I have images of spiders walking round shaking out shavings from their pockets after drilling their way in....

"living in locations around the UK. notably in Preston, Coventry, Wales and Scotland.

Preston & Coventry are so specific; why didn't they say 146 Bugsnest street, Preston, 57 Neverbeenthere Avenue, Coventry and somewhere insignificant that we can't pronounce in Wales and Scotland?
