On a night time jungle walk we were told not to touch anything, whatever happened. By the light of our head torches you could see the handrail on a wooden bridge covered with fire ants. They were so busy and intent on their business that you had to admire them. A bit like the January sales but less elbowing!
I have a lot of respect for ants.

yep its red ants that i have - i always thought it was the soldier ant that bit you?
anyway as i said in my earlier post i rarely put ant powder down - but i can understand why people do!
i once watched a documentary once where they showed you the most painful stings from an animal - and i think it was the bullet ant that came out on topLast edited by Matt94; 02-06-2012, 11:49 AM.

It depends on where they are and how many there are. I have no problem with them outside but when I have thousands of them crawling all over the kitchen floor it's not nice. I don't think they are a health hazard but it's not pleasant when you can't see your flooring for ants and they end up crawling all over you. I have had to put down ant traps as there seems to be a nest in the wall between myself and my neighbour. I'm all for live and let live but not when they're trespassing in large numbers!

I don't like to look over the side of the bed and see those monster ants walking past either! Makes you afraid to go to sleep!
We did once think to knock out a couple of nests (they are humungous nests) but while we were working one one side of the nest the beggars ran out the back holes of the nest and next thing are running up our legs under our jeans. Well I can tell you I didn't do that again! Scarred the neighbours for life when we ripped off our jeans doing a tribal ant nest dance and then running home with your jeans in your hands. If your mother ever told you to wear clean underwear............Ali

I don't mind them, unless there in the house
I even watched a gang of them attacking a cabbage white caterpiller once, and carting it off to there nest
I do wonder though if when they are farming aphids they actively protect them from aphid predators, eg ladybirds, not seen it though, so not sure

I've been trying to exterminate my ants but they seem to be resistant to everything I have tried so far.
They are red ants in the middle of my lawn and around the sandpit and my wee ones are 5 (keeps rolling around it) and 9 months (due to crawl soon).
I did try to move them off for a couple of years now but they aren't budging, and the friendly ways cost a fortune to try with no luck.
