  • Slugs "Last orders"

    Hi all....

1st year on the allotment for me.. I want to put some slug beer traps in my raised beds.

Can anyone tell me, will any beer do lager, bitter, ale etc... or is one better than the other?

    Thanks in advance.

Free beer is the best. I used to get the dregs from the landlord of local when he was line cleanng etc, Got funny looks walking home from pub with a gallon of cloudy beer though. Always used bitter but no reason why any wouldnt work as far as I am aware

I got a few bottles of cheap larger last year and it worked, although I did read somewhere that "proper" beer, you know the "guest ale" types but I reckon that costs too much to give the slugs and is better drunk by me!

Hope all goes well with your lottie - I got mine at Christmas and am still learning as well, though I did convert my back garden into a mini lottie for the first time last year.

Looking forward to reading your posts and seeing how you get along!

Seeing as my allotment is almost nextdoor to the local pub I think I am going to pop along for a swift pint and ask about recycling the slop's.

I will see if I can have some from the ale and lager and see which traps perform better.

Thanks for your views..... I will keep you posted.

I think there is a pub next to most everywhere . Isn't odd how the British always give directions using PUBS as highlighted landmarks . "Turn left by the Old Nags Head etc etc" ...Lauren

I suppose the slugs with beards and sandals would prefer the real ale but the hoodie ones would probably prefer lager or cider.

I started off using "cheap" lager, and then watered it down a bit. Unless you can get free dregs, it does seem a bit of a waste and can be expensive in the long run.

I can recommend using brewers yeast. It comes in powder form, in a tub, and is sold in health-food shops. You mix it with water. It smells more like Marmite than beer, I'm afraid, but it proved just as attractive to slugs when used in traps.

I tried a couple of commercially available traps, but they weren't deep enough and some dried out too quickly - I ended up making my own from plastic bottles and cups. You can use anything from a small coke bottle to a two-litre monster - depends on the scale of your problem!!

Cut a window in the side of a soft-drink bottle - say an inch by two inches - and plant the bottle vertically so that window is just above the soil surface. Pack in the soil to keep the bottle secure. Pour in your chosen attractant, making sure it doesn't come out of the window, secure the top, and wait for the carnage! (oh, and I have never found a drowned beetle in one which is pleasing).

Always remember to check around and under your traps regularly - those which are clever enough to avoid the contents sometimes like to make their home nearby!!

Oh yes I say that person using the BRAN, but she said it eventually didn't work as well as she hoped. ...Lauren

I tried bran last year it didnt seem to kill the slugs just sort of filled them out, after a few days they seem to go back to size and slither off. Tried oats as well same sort of result. I also read that you are not meant to leave raw bran or porridge oats lying out incase the birds get at it, its meant to swell in their stomaches. ( not good )
