Wasps nest - how to get rid

Hi All,

I discovered a wasps nest a few days ago in my compost bin (which I don't use often enough.) I flipped the lid off the bin, thinking that exposing them to wind and rain would encourage them to clear off, but it doesn't seem to be working so far.

Any ideas as to how I could get rid, without having to fork out £80 for a man to do it for me?

You can buy sprays/foams and try it yourself.

My dad got rid of one in his loft, he got stung in the process, so be careful.

How much of a problem is it? If it's only small then you could just leave it.

If you don't often use your compost bin, shut the lid and leave them to it. They'll go at the end of the year. Otherwise, if you can seal the bin (using binbags or similar) and spray waspkiller inside, they will die.
As Mark says ^^^^^ take care around them, cover yourself up as much as possible and don't do it if you are allergic to stings, just in case.

watch for where they go in ....wait till night and spray foam in the entrance, or put powder by entrance.

Seems a very blunt gung-ho method....perhaps slightly risky advice to give? I strongly suggest you that wait till they are all safely indoors at night and kill them there...as above.

As capsid said unless their flight path is a real nuisance...leave them well alone. make another compost heap for the time being..they dont use the same nest twice.....they are useful aphid eating, raspberry pollinating machines.....only really become a pain when tipsy on fermenting apples and dozy in September/Oct or if you have a picnic.

But I'm allergic, so I would. I paid £45 two years ago, I think £80 is a bit steep - have you g**gled?

If they're not really in your way, as has been said they are useful in the garden.

We can be so quick to dismiss and exterminate things which we don't like or consider a nusiance.
Of course you are highly allergic or have children or pets which play in that area then I guess you may have to get rid of them.

Trust me - if I weren't allergic, I'd definitely leave them be. Perhaps I shouldn't have posted, as it's not an accurate account of how I view wildlife.

I remember one evening standing by our back door with a large G&T with a fly swat. As workers arrived at their ill placed home I dispatched them one by one. Most amused I shouted out to Mrs P the running total. Suddenly a cloud of soldiers came out...I was stung very nastily in the ear...most sore red and throbbing.... and no sympathy...'that'll teach you'
