Grubs.

I found one when I was weeding the polytunnel today, I left him out on the post beside the bird feeders. I know we hate grubs and don't want them anywhere near the place but I never actually found out why.

What do they get up to that's so bad?

I found plenty of slugs and snake millipedes too.

Depends on the type of grub, but most of them eat plant roots.

He certainly wasn't eating the roots of the weeds, I would've let him stay if he did that.

Some larvae do become beneficial adult insects also, e.g. ladybirds, so depends on which species you specifically mean by 'grub'.

I had an infestation of root/vine weevil larvae in the greenhouse last year and they killed off all my strawberries. The plants started to look quite ill so I tried picking a few dead leaves off of one, the whole plant came away in my hand and there in the soil was a fat grub

There are leather jacket grubs in my garden. I throw them into the field next door for the birds

They're what we called leather jackets growing up but I didn't know if anyone else called them that.

The leather jacket is the larvae of the crane fly - daddy long legs. There has been mention of vine weevil but they are totally dis-similar in appearance but both are quite destructive

The leather jackets will eat away at roots on some plants Darwin. Let the birdies have a feast

I've been doing a little googling, definitely leather jackets, luckily I've never seen any vine weevils. I had no idea they were crane flies, that's my new thing learned for the day

I would have posted a link to a pic of leatherjackets but I've forgotten the advice given to me by BB (Bearded Bloke) and I can't remember the thread he gave me the advice in <shamed look>
