Slug Hunting.

Began my nightly slug hunting in the veg garden tonight. 242 was the count and I was by no means thorough! And two hedgehogs...

If you had a few more hedgehogs you would have a lot less slugs.

Just come in from my nightly (when I remember) hunt. Due to my location, I've been doing it for a couple of months now. Catch less and less (and smaller ones) now. Raised garden, so few come in from neighbours etc, luckily... Around 10 is a big catch!

I have nothing planted out yet other than onions so they'll be hungry if the come here. I've never even thought if going out hunting for them.

How do you guys dispose of your slugs?

I've tried the bucket of salt method, I've tried cutting them in half with secateurs, both ways make me feel ill...

Really? I've never seen a slug in Spain. Only I saw a few in the Pyrenees, the ones people call babosas. However, I used to have lots of lumbricidaes, ants, scorpions, snails and caracolas (the white ones).

Really, really! ;-) Various sizes of big black slugs. 'normal' (for me, English) snails, and (not normal for me) triangular, pointy snails. The Unusual Snails are EVERYWHERE in the orange groves.

If you so wish I shall take a HD photo (at night) of a snail/slug/both (your choice ;-) ) with my allotment area as a background

I believe you. I though slugs prefer wet weather, but I see they adapt to any climate.

I'm going to try the 'make your own nematodes' method I think! Just need to remember to buy a bucket with a lid, the last lot escaped! Having huge problems getting hold of nematodes here, so I've decided to go gruesome. Apparently you collect about 20 slugs in a bucket, add some greenery for them and an inch or so of water, wait a couple of weeks and hey presto... At least one of the slugs is likely to be infected with nematodes already, and will infect all the others - so you strain the resulting gloop and dilute ready to water onto your veggies... or so the story goes. Pyrenees Plot - sounds like you could get a thriving business going where you are, given the number of slugs you find every day!!

I use a salty slug pot of death...

It's (usually) hot and dry by now so I've not used nematodes.

I'm lucky in that we have a field next door, so they take a long jump. Not sure I'd be able to hurt them, myself.

SpanishGardener; it may be warm here, but it'd fecking windy at the mo, and it's scheduled for rain during the next week...

If I find them during the day I just chuck them out the door and hope the birds find them. They probably head straight back in again.

They love it and die with a grin on there face !
