  • Protection from birds

Hi all, i am looking for ideas on protecting my strawberries and in future other fruits from birds. Has anyone bought bird protection netting or similar before or use anything else for this? I looked on www.kingsseeds.com, they have bird netting, but i am not paying £60 for 50m which i wont use. I was thinking more of something with a cup-shape to put over. maybe get some chicken wire and bend it myself?!
it would be good to have some strawberries for ourselves this year.
    Best Wishes

I'm going to use some left over aviary mesh bent into shape for mine!

Went to our local pound shop and found fine mesh green netting - two pieces (quite large) for £1. Simply support with short canes with a flower pot or bottle on top to stop the netting falling down, and peg into the ground.

You can do as Rustylady suggests, or you can buy bird protection net here, by the metre.

I have made a rough but effective frame with short cane and wire and chucked pond netting over it secured at the edges with some lengths of timber I had lying around.

Pond netting is cheap and I've found it much easier to handle, and is stronger, than plastic netting which has always got into a real tangle in my experience.

The strawbs are completely protected and this year they're mine, all mine!
