  • Slugs really are invincible

So I've just been looking in my pond for the past 20 minutes (bearing in mind that my pond is a plant pot dug into the ground, and as such no larger than 30cm across), and I happened to see a slug lying motionless in the bottom.

I imagined that the slug was probably the slug I threw in for the tadpoles a few days ago (in case they were now in the meat eating stage and requiring protein... they weren't), and decided I'd pick it out to help deter the pond from going rancid.

So I picked the slug out, put it on the soil annddd.... it started crawling away!!

Now I'm not sure it's the same slug from a few days ago, but I can say with almost absolute certainty that it had been in there for at least 20 minutes, and probably longer.

It's quite warm and dry outside and I think it's extremely unlikely that the slug dropped in just prior to me looking in the pond.

20 minutes without breathing!! At least.

Bow down to our slug overlords!

Talking about high altitude, i worked on a mill roof repairing the eaves and gutter and the underside of the stone roof slates were littered with Leopard slugs ....at 45ft up. Mainly living on pigeon excrement and other dross that washes down the roof but definately thriving.

It was identified by the symbol "Oh"
