Emptying Slug Beer Traps ??

I know this sounds as though I am a bit of a wimp (its true I am) but what is the best way to dispose of slimey mouldy `orrible' contents of the slug beer traps.

I keep empying them on the garden but wonder if that's OK or would the composter or dustbin be better.

The secret is to empty them after a couple of days - not leave them until they go mouldy and smell evil. Mine go into the compost bin.

on the garden, if you don't have dogs that would eat them, or in the compost heap. Compost everything !

(and you wouldn't want your black bin smelling of slug stew forever and a day would you?)

Thanks folks - not only am I wimp but a bit on the tight side ie a can of beer every couple of days would be a bit exessive but I am happy now that I know I can compost them without contaminating the compost

Send them to Bearded Bloke, he drinks them, claiming there is no point wasting good beer and that you don't need a curry afterwards.

you don't have to use beer, you could use yeast & sugary water

do put some twigs in the pots though, or you'll drown beneficial insects like beetles & spiders

A query though - if the spiders and beetles can get out can't the slugs also get out by the same root.

I have always been dubious of slug traps, but from what everyone is saying they work.

Can't remember what it is but there can be something in slugs and snails which can be very harmful and potentially fatal for dogs so better not to let dogs eat them.

Any slug pellets containing metaldehyde are very poisonous / fatal to dogs and other animals

Strange I should see the last two posts today. I was on a caravan site and two ladies were talking one of whom had a dog. The one without a dog was saying that she had spen the whole of March at the site but had to go home when her dog became sick. She took it to her vet and he diagnose pneumonia caused by eating slugs. March was wet and the fields around have millions of slugs. Anyway her dog had died caused by eating slugs. He didn't make mention of slug pellets and I can't see the site using slug pellets where there are little children about and I can't see them using pellets in the natural unkempt areas. So maybe it is the slugs that kill and not the pellets.

Just a thought - no knowdge behind the thought.

Hi lizzy, the other thing linking slugs and dogs are worms, so healthy, normal, unpoisoned slugs are also a danger to dogs in that way and it's worth protecting dogs against lungworm caught from slugs also. Sounds like that might have been what happened there, can be quite a serious problem. Hope that helps a little. Sarah (speaking as a farm vet who was once trained in dogs at some point!)
