  • Cabbage whites.

Maybe I am getting confused but I thought it was time for cabbage white butterflies? I saw one in May and since then nothing. Last year I seem to remember clouds of them in biblical proportions at this time of year. Am I being somewhat optomistic?

I've seen a few of them about, but a tiny fraction of last year's.

Apologies if I already posted this, but the mild winter is bad for insects that overwinter as pupae, like cabbage whites. They tend to succumb to fungus diseases and to predators that are still moving about.

Insects that hibernate as adults, like peacock and small tortoiseshell butterflies, had a much better time of it.

I've seen quite a few, probably not as many as last year but am certainly not going to risk removing any netting!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We were just saying no butterflies yet. The odd one or two, but not many of any species. The cabbage whites were horrendous last year, hordes & hordes of them

I also saw the first one in the garden today. If I'd known you were missing them Bill, I'd have paid its train fare...

On the general subject of insects, this time last year my lavender was awash with carder and garden bumbles, but so far I've seen no carders and only a few garden/white tailed bumbles. Anyone else got many?

I saw one in my net tunnel with my cauliflowers. Needless to say he regretted it.

Last year I had to de-egg and shoe away cabbage whites at least twice a day and still lost a lot to the darn things. This year I haven't seen any cabbage whites and found the first few eggs this morning

I must admit I haven't seen any, but then again I don't have any cabbages in my garden.

You don't need cabbages the still come looking.

I was wondering if you can buy military surplus anti aircraft guns or maybe a bazooka?

Saw one today, typical that I don't see any until we removed the netting I've had on the brassicas since late april! Might have to put it back on over the weekend, after checking for caterpillars of course.

I've not seen any for ages. I netted my brassicas that were still in pots at home, last year and they still managed to get them. Seen a few red admirals though.
